There may be a partial VIN number in one string of letters and numbers and the suffix code will be at the end of a second string of letters and numbers. If the block has been resurfaced (decked), the codes might have been removed and in that case the date and casting numbers will need to be used to ID the parts, along with any other visual cues that may be available. *Suffix and VIN codes from nastyz28.com *BBC suffix codes from chevymania.com *SBC suffix codes from chevymania.com ==Date code== The date code is located in the same area as the casting number on the Chevy V8 engines. The date code generally has a letter followed by two or three numbers. The letter is the month. The next number or two numbers will be the day of the month. The last number is the last digit of the year. :Example: C124 :*C = March (A = Jan., B = Feb., etc.) :*12 = day of the month :*4 = year ending in 4, i.e. 1964, 1974, 1984, etc. ==BBC casting number data bases== *Big Block Chevy Engine Parts Identification from nastyz28.com ==Resources== *SBC general decoding information *Stock piston specs
