<p>This "Swap Solutions" series of Wiki articles is intended to help the customizer, swapper, shade-tree mechanic, or junkyard crawler. The idea is this: When you pull an axle, engine, tranny, driveshaft, bearing, or ANYTHING from your car, measure the heck out of it. Countless times I've found myself wishing I had a source to know if this axle will fit that car, how much that ISB Cummins engine weighs, or if a driveshaft already exists that fits my custom install instead of paying to have one fabricated.</p> <p>This article is for Engines. Many times I've wanted to know engine weights, dimensions, configurations, and specs and found information on the net lacking to say the least. For those of you who want to know if that 392 Hemi will fit between the rails of your '32, this is for you. If someone can figure out how to format columns on wiki, please do cause I can't figure it out. Suggested columns are:</p> <ol> <li>Engine brand, family, displacement, application. Don't just say Ford Small Block because the 289 is different from the 351, even though they're both Windsors. Also avoid simply saying AMC 258. Be descriptive and tell us its a straight six.</li> <li>Engine weight, with notations about what that includes: accessories, manifolds, aluminum or iron components, etc.</li> <li>Overall length. The most helpful dimension here is from the front of the crank pulley to the bellhousing flange at the back. All engines will likely need a crank pulley, so its the most commonly needed dimension.</li> <li>Overall width with manifolds (or headers but note which one)</li> <li>Overall width without manifolds</li> <li>Overall height to the top of the intake, noting if its stock or aftermarket</li> <li>Overall height, to the top of the valve covers making sure to note if they are stock or aftermarket</li> <li>Depth of the sump; basically from the oil pan rail down to the deepest point, again noting what pan it is.</li> <li>Starter on the left or right</li> <li>Fuel pump on the left or right (or no provisions for mechanical pump)</li> <li>Distributor location, front or rear.</li> <li>Notes; does that straight six have the exhaust and intake on the same side, or opposite? Is it a one or two piece rear main seal? Is that Chevy a vortec? Roller cam or flat? Angle plug or straight? Are you describing a marine block or a military application?</li> </ol>
