===Pre-1980 VIN Identification=== In 1980 Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) were standardized using a seventeen digit system. Prior to 1980 manufacturers used VINs unique to their own company. Understanding these codes can be very helpful. Decoding these VINs can be difficult. the purpose of this page is to list resources to aid in identifying these codes. ====Decoders==== These are online decoders where you enter your VIN and it shows the information pertinent to that VIN. *1970 - 1980 #[http://www.medicine.wisc.edu/~mrm/bronco/ftvin.cgi FORD Truck VIN# Identification] Decoder covering years 1970 through 1980. 100 through 350 Series including Bronco. It includes a decoder covering transmissions and front and rear axles. #[http://brochures.slosh.com/vindecoder.html 1967/1973-1987] Chevy truck VIN decoder *1960 - 1969 #[http://www.twisterspecialregistry.com/VINDECODER.html Ford and Mustang Decoder] This decoder will work on 1965-1973 Mustang's and 1960-1969 Ford's. #[http://www.1963chevrolet.com/tools.htm Chevy VIN Decoder] Works for all Chevrolet passenger cars for 1958-1969 #[http://www.mkellstrand.com/corvairs/resources/vin/vin_decoder.html Corvair VIN Decoder] 1960 - 1969 Chevy Corvairs #[http://www.abvwc.org.uk/vw_vin.htm VW VIN Decoder] For those with a 9- or 10-digit VIN (Chassis Number) built after 1965 but before 1980. The information encoded in the VIN is limited to year and body type. It should also work for most VW cars with a 17 digit VIN code (built after 1980). *1950 - 1959 *1940 - 1949 *1930 - 1939 *1920 - 1929 *1910 - 1919 ====Decoders that cover a wide range of years==== #[http://www.ford-trucks.com/vin-decoder/index.php?a=decode Ford Trucks VIN Decoder] Covers Ford pickups 1951 - 1980. On the two VINs I tested it with it got some of the information right, but some was missing. With my 1972 F350 it came up with the right year, engine and assembly plant but the model was unknown. With my 1977 F150 it came up with the right model but the year was unknown. I didn't test it with any 50s or 60s VINs. (Needs further testing) #[http://www.americanclassic.com/paint.htm Chevy Pickup Decoder 1] [http://www.americanclassic.com/paint_test.asp Chevy Pickup Decoder 2] American Classic Truck Parts Chevrolet pickup decoder. I found two pages that appears to have the same decoder. as far as I can tell it covers 1946 to 1972 Chevy pickups.
