Nothing can be more annoying or dangerous as a dirty windshield. A dirty windshield can be very dangerous because it restricts or blocks your view. Especially if traveling in a high bug area such as Florida. Keeping the glass on your vehicle clean is as important as checking the oil & tires . These things you could have done in a full service gas station , But I have not seen one of them in many years. The out side of the glass is not very hard . choose the glass cleaner of your liking & spray it on liberally, rub vigorously back & forth & in circles concentrating on the edges until clean. I like Windex the best but I am always trying new stuff. Vinegar & water can be used if you are unable to buy glass cleaner. A squeegee can be used too, they come single & double sided . I have a few that are telescopic to clean the glass on my trucks. Some come with cleaner dispenser inside. Seems to me the cheaper your paper towels the better they clean. News Paper also works real well but can leave ink on your hands. Cleaning the inside mainly the windshield & back glass are the hardest to get totally clean because of the angle. Put a towel on the dashboard to keep any excess liquid from getting into the instrument panel. Using a lot of cleaner spray it from top to bottom & rub just like on the out side paying a lot of attention to the edges that seems to be the spot you will not see until later in the night time. And around the rear view mirror. Have a Plastic trash bag for the used towels be aware if you have a light colored interior not to set a dirty paper towel on a seat or piece that the dirt can bleed in.
