Editing 700r4 problems

i put a 700r4 into my s-10 with a 350 and can not get it to shift properly...
1st and 2nd run good get going fast quick 3rd and overdrive are another story though. 
i can manually shift from 2nd to third when i get back on it its like neutral, but i can shift into 4th then back to 3rd and feels like its in geer until i press on the gas pedal. 
the guys i had do the install are not experts but work on minor problems alot. i am wondering if it is a simple adjustment or that something is not hooked up right. 
if anyone has an idea please let me know.
