Success in its entirety can be defined in a lot of ways; ask 100 people for their definition and you'll probably get 100 unique descriptions. But what studies are now finding is that in its entirety, the way we approach success is very different than it was 30 rice. If we go back a new generation or two, workers (typically male) described success in terms of money and power. One of the reasons women (and increasingly men as well) get lost because definition is our lives are so much more than the money we earn or the energy we command while face to face. We hold equally important such things as our family, our health, our friendships and the way we give back to your communities. We recognize our article topics deep inside, and look for ways to bring them to light in numerous ways as possible. Our jobs may be a part of who we are. But that doesn't mean our full concentration and our thoughts and energy are structured around it. Instead, we look for ways to enjoy our careers AND the rest in our lives as well. If a company recognizes this and gives you flexibility in the manner you do your job, it is likely you are much happier with your career. If they hold you to some strict timetable, both in terms of after you come into work and the hours you work when you finally get there, probably not so much. People today have a lot happening in their daily routines. They may have to take care of a parent still living of their own home with beginning signs of Alzheimer's, as well as a family conversant in several small children. They will be the coach for their daughters' softball team, as well as chairperson for their industry's local association. They could possibly be on a running club for the weekends, and book clubs in the week. They know what's important into their lives … and increasingly devoting 40, 50, 60 hours a week or higher to a position that may or will not be there in a year isn't really cutting it. Why should we devote a whole lot of time to something that we have no idea if it will benefit us when we need it the most? Why not spend our time and our energy on something that is to be there because we develop it into something more on the way? If you work for "the boss", you'll almost be required to work your 40 hours, plus any overtime dictated on the top whether you get purchased it or not. Vacations? Fewer people are taking them as a result of fear of what will eventually their position while they are usually away. Health insurance? We're paying an increasing number of of it ourselves, with companies kicking in less all the time. Pensions? We see what's happening to today's retirees for the reason that pensions they thought would become there slowly (or quickly in certain cases) slip away. Maybe you adore your job. Maybe you love your situation. Yet not realizing its limitlessness now is almost like living in a situation of denial. If you depend on it now and down the road, for all of your needs through retirement and till the day you die, you're most probably in for a rude waking up. A very rude one indeed. Lifestyle design doesn't mean reducing your job today. It means designing your life in a fashion that benefits you the most. It means setting up your 24 hours in one day, 7 days in the few days, any way you choose and see fit for family and friends. That may mean working your own 40 hour job indefinitely. It may be finding a means to create a business out of your BIG IDEA now to enable you to start earning money off of the usb ports in the coming months. Sort of a security policy but if your current job disappears in this months or years ahead. It might be having more flexibility in your existing position - maybe going part time so you have the time to fit in all of your current family's needs, from your mom identified as having Alzheimer's, to your bookclub on Thursday nights. And a not much time for turning your passion in to a business as well. Lifestyle design means spending time at the beach with young kids while they're young; not regretting any time you didn't spend with them once they are off at college. Lifestyle design means enjoying a trip worldwide now, rather than waiting for the "someday" that likely will never be if you wait until your 60s, 70s or perhaps beyond. What's your lifestyle style definition? Anything you want it to be. And that's the true beauty than it. And its also why its here to keep, whether you love the phrase or not.
