If you are thinking about registering for a Meisner summer intensive program this year, it is never too early to begin researching potential schools and setting up interviews. At Maggie Flanigan Studio, we began accepting applications and arranging interviews in November. How should you begin to find the right class for you? NYC offers you a number of choices. Many studios charge significant amounts of money during their summer acting program to carry them through to fall classes. Knowing your needs and knowing what to look for will help you to better make a decision that will be well worth your money. Items to consider: 1. Go to the Studio's Website and Look Around Doing your homework is crucial. Be thorough when checking out the website. The way a studio creates and maintains their website can indicate the quality of the studio as well. Does the website give you a feel for the studio's mission? Is the site designed to target the professional or does it sound as if they are more interested in attracting the inexperienced and naive? Is the site too focused on bragging about the qualifications and achievements of their instructors? Or does the studio seem more focused on the school as a whole? Who do they send to speak with you? Do they make you buy products prior to interviewing? These are all potential red flags. Any studio worth choosing should place the student's needs first. 2. Visit the Studios You are Considering Visiting a studio will provide you with more knowledge about the school than you could ever get online. Is the studio as you thought it would be? Were you greeted with enthusiasm? Was the staff ready to help you in any way possible? Did you feel welcome and secure while there? Did the space have a good aesthetic? Was a tour of the studio offered while you were there? When you walked through the facility, could you see yourself there for a Meisner summer intensive program? 3. Seek Out Studio Recommendations from Others Nothing is more valuable than recommendations from trusted friends. You should be cautious around schools that promise you success and fame. Personal perspectives from current and past students will allow to obtain first-hand knowledge before you even show up to your first day of class at the summer intensive program. You will want to seek out people who are committed to the same goals. Comprehensive acting techniques cannot be learned during a summer session. However, there is certainly much that can be learned. Our goal, along with providing quality acting instruction in Meisner principles, is to develop our students' love of acting. With the right Meisner summer intensive class, you could truly give your career a great boost.
