Yes it can be used to reduce the piston to head clearance. In my project this would mean a 0.1" machining of the deck to get the required squish. Instead I'll go with minimal decking 0.005" - 0.009" to get it squared and have custom made pistons do the squish.

I would suggest to modify this article to reflect what decking is, what we can achieve with decking and what the limits are.
