The motor mounts of a 292 are staggered and the fuel pump is mid-block. The smaller Chevy inline sixes have the motor mounts directly across from each other, and the fuel pump is closer to the front of the block.

The 194-250 engines have the water pump hole in the front of the block about 0.25" from the deck surface. The 292 w/p hole is about 1.5". Also the side covers on a 194-250 are about 4.5" tall while the 292 is about 6" tall.

261's had a head with the casting number ending with 850. If you think you have a 261, look in front of the starter for two small raised lines (Army Captain's bars) on the passenger side. Also look just above the oil pan rail on the driver's side for two oil lines or pipe plugs, one above the other. 261's were set up to install a full-flow oil filter, as an alternative to the crappy bypass filters that were in common use.
