Most of the work on all paint jobs happens before the actual paint is applied. Old deteriorated paint and ALL RUST, trim, and glass must be removed down to base metal before any other work can begin . Any sheet metal work such as hammer and dolly or body panel replacement. I.e. Welding must be done at this time . Next body filler must be applied in stages in order to correct body curvature or non repairable sheet metal damage. Once all body filler is complete. The vehicle should be sprayed  with a high build automotive two part primer.  Then sanded in stages down to  a uniform 240-500 grit. . The darker the final color the finer the sanding AND  more precise the body work must be for a that "clean" paint job look. Then take it to a professional and work with them on what body  work you have done and YOUR expectations of the completed paint job, this important because this will set a  price range. The higher the price, generally the better the job. Not always so, examples of work or customer satisfaction websites may help you in your decision on what shop to use. You can also ask who your car insurance company uses. This method will save you time and money and may result in a show quality paint job..for cheaper.
