==Adding pages to categories==
I just framed out a [[Battling spam]] article, and will be working on that issue this week. I have a bunch of resources on this that I just need to review, and then implement some new tactics. I think we might go with captchas for unregistered users, as you had recommended. --[[User:Jon|Jon]] 21:19, 7 July 2009 (MDT)

To add an article to the Transmission category, put <nowiki>[[Category:Transmission]]</nowiki> at the bottom of the article. Then, it will automatically be listed on the [[:Category:Transmission|Transmission category page]]. You can also edit a category page like any other page. However, for now, the Transmission category page only contains the word "Transmission". The other parts ("Contributors to this page" and the listing of pages in the category, are added automatically. Here are a couple of external pages with more details on how categories work in wiki software.
:Made some headway here; I implemented a script called [http://www.umasswiki.com/wiki/UMassWiki:Bad_Behavior_2_Extended Bad Behavior], that monitors activity for signs of bots. Looks like it's working quite well. If that doesn't do it, next step is to use CATPCHAs, which I think we should do for unregistered users only, as you had suggested. Also, the [[Battling spam]] article is pretty comprehensive now.

==Using "Talk" pages==

==Added new spamblocking solution==
The software that runs this wiki is called MediaWiki. The manual for it is [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Contents here]. Some of it is going to be difficult to understand for anyone who's not a computer programmer, but a lot of it should be fairly easy for you. Here's the manual page on using these "Talk" pages: [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Talk_pages Talk page manual]. Basically, you can just edit these pages like a wiki page. Every article has an associated "Talk" page, accessible by clicking the "discussion" tab at the top of the article. Talk pages for articles are used for discussing the article, rather than directly editing it. Every user also has a Talk page, it's analogous to the PM system used on forums, but it's not private. You can delete all the edits I've made on your Talk page as you choose, and you can also leave me messages on [[User_talk:Jon my Talk page]], and I'll get a notification as soon as I get on the wiki.

I added a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha CAPTCHA] solution to the wiki today, which will require users to solve a very simple math problem before adding a url to a page. Hopefully this will cut down on the recent spambot attacks, but, if not, I can always tweak it further.--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 12:55, 3 October 2011 (MDT)
