− | ==Category tags removed== | + | ==Recent "new" page== |
− | Jon ... I have noticed on some edits I make to articles, there seems to be some parts of the articles that disappear without me doing it. Recent edit on "Thermostats Explained" as an example. I removed some words in ALL CAPS. A few days later I notice the listing tags at the bottom of the page had disappeared. The tags that would place the article in "good article" list and the "cooling" tag for that list, both had disappeared.
| + | A page [http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/index.php?title=Spark_advance&rcid=27905 Spark advance] was recently added. This is a cut and paste of a widely circulated 'article' that is all over the 'net. As it stands now this page does not have a category specified, so is in limbo. Any suggestions as to what to do w/it?--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 18:25, 22 June 2012 (MDT) |

Browser glitch maybe?--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 22:59, 30 September 2011 (MDT) | + | You may have noticed a large number of recently blocked IPs. I'm sure you are aware that if the Recent changes are viewed using the ''enhanced recent changes'' (in 'my preferences'/''Recent changes''), the list of blocked IPs is compacted into an expandable tab so it doesn't take up a large amount of space. These IPs were found on various article's discussion pages (mainly, some have also been found in the history of the actual article page). The IPs belonged to spammers that had their content removed, but the IPs were not blocked by a previous admin. In some cases this resulted in numerous reposted spam. Because these occurred some time ago, this may be closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, but my thoughts were if I'm there anyway I would block them. Is this unnecessary?--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 22:49, 30 June 2012 (MDT) |

| + | :That's fine. IANAL, but Neighbors's portrayal of copyright law may be incomplete. The wiki is clear, via the text beneath the posting box: ''"If you do not want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then do not submit it here.You are also promising us that you wrote this yourself, or copied it from a public domain or similar free resource. Do not submit copyrighted work without permission!"''. AFAIK, copyright law has limited recognition of "gimme-backsies". Once you release something into the public domain, or the Creative Commons license that we use, (as long as you are legally entitled to license it accordingly in the first place!), it's very difficult to retract (though not technically impossible, see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golan_v._Holder Golan v. Holder]). Not really an issue in this case, but, in the future, if you come across a user who is demanding a ''significant'' deletion, you likely don't need to comply, especially as their contributions may be intermingled with the contributions of other editors, and too difficult to disentangle. In some situations, you may encounter users who, simply out of spite, demand that all of their contributions be deleted. Per their use of the wiki, they will most likely have previously abandoned the right to make that demand.--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 21:59, 17 September 2012 (MDT) |

| + | ::Thanks for the clarification, Jon. I felt in this particular case that the content that was requested to be removed could be deleted w/o causing any problems w/the continuity of the article as a whole, since it had already been removed from the article itself. That's mainly why I made the decision to delete as requested. For the record, rest assured had this issue been any more involved I would have asked for your advice and guidance in handling it.--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 07:38, 18 September 2012 (MDT) |

− | Jon, I appreciate your article on keeping your stove bolt in your hotrod! I purchased a 1948 chevy fleetmaster last fall. I drove it home and it is original except the orange paint. It needs some body work but it is not bad at all. I have been strugglin back and forth with keepin the stove bolt 216 or swappin out with a small block. I have wrestled with it because I plan to make this an everyday driver. It was this week infact that I decided I wanted to keep the stove bolt but It needs the babbit bearings replace and I hope to do that this winter. I need advice on how to go about it. I am working out of my garage on my home so this is a shade tree machanic here. No lifts or all the goodies found in a speed shop. I also want to go to double or triple carbs and dual exhaust. I agree this is a cool way to go but my only concern is right now is 55 mph seems to be the max this old girl wants to put out.

− | ::'''Jon''', I thought when I finished the "Driveshaft measurements" page that it was linking to the new "Driveshaft" category correctly- I added "Category:Driveshaft" inside two brackets to the page to link it to the title page. Did I not do this correctly? I clicked on "Driveshaft" before I logged out and it was showing the "Driveshaft measurements" page then... unless that was due to what you did.
| + | |
− | :::It's tricky with categories. On the wiki, you can create a link to a page by enclosing a word in double brackets. If the page already exists, the bracketed word gets turned into a link to the page, in blue link color, like this: [[Rust]]. If the page '''does not''' already exist, the bracketed word gets turned into a link to a blank page, in red color, like this: [[How to change your blinker fluid]]. You can click on the red link, and start editing a page from there (some people use this method to start a new article). For example, you can click on your username in red text on this page, and start making your user page. Now, when you start a new category, even if you put pages in the category, the category page itself is blank, so the link shows as red. So, you have to add any text to the category page, like: "Driveshaft articles.", and then links to that category will turn blue. However, the category will still work fine, even if it's a red-link. Here's another example of a page with a bunch of red, undeveloped links: [[Quadrajet]].--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 11:10, 30 January 2012 (MST)

− | ==Consolidating similar subjects within a category==
| |
− |
| |
− | ===Regarding a proposed 'Camshaft' article:===
| |
− |
| |
− | There's already a couple pages pertaining to some part of camshafts ([[Cam and compression ratio compatibility]] and [[Camshaft install tips and tricks]]) under the 'Engine' category.
| |
− |
| |
− | I want to do an article with an overview of how the camshaft works, along info on the different types of cams and why they came to be, etc.
| |
− |
| |
− | My question is, should this be a new category like what was done with 'Quadrajet carburetor', or should it be a page in 'Engine' like the two pages I mentioned above?
| |
− |
| |
− | Or is there a way to use a bullet list in the different categories, i.e.:
| |
− |
| |
− | (Engine category, under "C")
| |
− | *Camshaft page (either as a page containing the info I mentioned above like 'How the cam works', 'Types of cams', etc., or just used as a title with the actual pages below this not-linked title)
| |
− | **Cam and compression ratio compatibility page
| |
− | **Camshaft install tips and tricks page
| |
− | **Et cetera?
| |
− |
| |
− | There are other instances where this could put pages on a similar subject together under a heading- like :
| |
− |
| |
− | *RPO codes (containing an overview and possibly other info)
| |
− | **GM RPO build codes
| |
− | **General Motors build codes
| |
− | **More GM RPO codes
| |
− |
| |
− | There are actually many subjects that could be done this way, like firing orders of various engines that are listed separately, valve train components that are listed separately, reciprocating assembly components that are listed separately, etc.
| |
− |
| |
− | I would have tried this out on one subject to see what it looked like and how it performed, but I seem to be unable to edit the list of pages in the individual categories like 'Engine', etc.
| |
− | --[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 20:45, 18 February 2012 (MST)
| |
− | :I would just do it with subcategories. A category can be placed in a category, just like a page. If we have 3 camshaft articles, then that's enough to start a subcategory under Engine. Keep in mind that it's not carved in stone; we can easily adjust and re-categorize as necessary, and as the article base grows. The list of pages in individual categories is created automatically, and isn't normally editable. If you add a page to a category, it will appear in that list. If you add a category to a category, it will appear as a subcategory in that category. So, in this case, just add '''<nowiki>[[Category:Camshaft]]</nowiki>''' at the bottom of one of the camshaft articles. Then, click on the category link for Camshaft at the bottom of the resulting saved page. On ''that'' page, add '''<nowiki>[[Category:Engine]]</nowiki>''' at the bottom.--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 21:00, 18 February 2012 (MST)

− | I was thinking about editing the categories to be seen as an alphabetized list instead of listed in a sentence [http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/53181/cat/500/page/1 as seen here].
| |
− |
| |
− | What are your thoughts on this?
| |
− |
| |
− | Ideally if this were to be done, there would be two or more columns so the entire list could be seen w/o scrolling. I have been unsuccessful finding a way to format it in this fashion- and I spent some considerable time and effort looking into it.
| |
− |
| |
− | Is there an easy way to have multiple columns on a page?
| |
− | Is there a way to alphabetize a list other than to do it "long hand", i.e.
| |
− |
| |
− | <nowiki>==B==</nowiki>

− | On the left side of all wiki pages there is no listing for Quadrajet carburetors under ''categories'' , the listing for it only appears on the Main Page. Can you correct this?--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 09:20, 15 March 2012 (MDT)
| |
− | :Yes, I can correct that easily, that's set manually. Are we sure that we want that category listed there? Those are generally our main categories. If Quadrajet goes there, then there's justification to put various other categories there too--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 10:22, 15 March 2012 (MDT)
| |
− | ::If I had it to do over, I'd have subcategorized Q-jet carbs within the Engine category. Or I'd have used Carburetors as the category instead of Quadrajet carburetors. If possible, remove Rochester carburetors from the Main Page categories, and I'll just subcategorize it (could I just remove the Quadrajet carburetors category from the Main Page, along w/the directs to it from the Q-jet pages?).--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 10:35, 15 March 2012 (MDT)
| |
− | :::You should be able to alter the category structure to your liking (and then easily re-alter in the future). I'm not seeing the Quadrajet carburetors category on the main page. Of course there's no perfect categorization paradigm; we'll probably alter and tweak the categories forever. Also, the lower images on the homepage look weird. Almost as if they're smaller images, enlarged.--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 11:24, 15 March 2012 (MDT)
| |
− | ::::I had probably already removed Quadrajet carburetors from the categories on the Main Page by the time you looked for it- it was there. I subcategorized Carburetors in the Engine category, then subbed Quadrajet carburetors to Carburetors. Looks OK like that to me. All the carb articles are still in the Engine category excepting the Q-jet articles. If need be I can easily return them all to the Engine category along w/having them subbed, but my thoughts were to keep it as-is for now and see what it "feels" like after a few days.--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 12:16, 15 March 2012 (MDT)

| |
− | :Alright, I think I know what happened. I had made those images a while back specifically for the homepage (not exactly sure why; possibly some formatting issue), and they're only ~112px tall: http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/images/4/49/Homethumb2.jpg . When they get stretched beyond that, they start to look strange. Yes, top row looks fine.--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 14:40, 15 March 2012 (MDT)

− | I ran across a bit of spam in [[Freeing a stuck engine]] by user 27.126.152.82. All I did was undo revision 21208 to revert to previous version before I edited the article. Don't know if this gets this user "the boot" or what, but thought I'd mention it.--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 02:00, 18 March 2012 (MDT) | + | On a daily basis I have been removing a large amount of spam and blocking the users. I took a short break (approximately 60 hours) from deleting the spam here at the CC wiki, when I came back there were over 200 deletions and an additional 180 users to be blocked that needed to be done. This took several hours. Since I am not in a position to implement any procedures to prevent spam from entering the wiki, I am requesting that something more be done to prevent it as my time is better spent on other pursuits (both here and elsewhere).--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 20:36, 22 November 2013 (MST) |

− | ==Cobalt327 Discussion==
| + | |
− | Jon, how much open discussion do you want to have here on the record?
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | I feel Cobalt327 is trying exert authority he does not have and never will. My bad
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt327 the HR.com offender?===
| + | |
− | Cobalt treated me so poorly on HR.com and called me the "worse" moderator he had ever seen on any forum. That is part of where my distrust for him comes from.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Cobalt should have been suspended multiple times for his method of treating members on HR.com, he was not. Cobalt would edit out his inflammatory posts. The 'edit' time limit was shortened by Jon. Who complained the loudest? Cobalt327.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Why was Cobalt not suspended? The answer given by many involved in the discussion; Because Cobalt327 contributes enough good tech info from internet search engines. . Another answer provided was; coblat327 provides a 'useful service'
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt comes to Crankshaft Wiki===
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | After what seemed to be paranoid thoughts , impressions or something on the Crankshaft Wiki (here in referred to as the Wiki)... Cobalt327 joins and proceeds forward. Soon he provides his extensive internet search engine knowledge to the Wiki
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Soon Cobalt and Crosley butt heads===
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Primarily on the T-350 Rebuild Tech article. Cobalt altered the T-350 Rebuild thread name. This cancels links Crosley has in place on sites. Cobalt adds incorrect information or fotos. Crosley corrects. Cobalts corrects Crosley edits, Crosley not happy. Cobalt adds non rebuild tech stuff. Crosley removes it. Cobalt 327 not(unknown) happy? Crosley does not care. Cobalt327 may not care either.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt327 adds signature for Crosley===
| + | |
− | On the the talk page : [http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Talk:T-350_rebuild_tech T-350 Rebuild Talk] Cobalt has now added my signature to a location I did not add. '''I concider that a gross personal violation.'''
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt group hug===
| + | |
− | Also on the same [http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Talk:T-350_rebuild_tech T-350 Rebuild Talk] page Cobalt posts; '''"There is no need for continued animosity. I again will say that I'm willing to put the past behind us in an effort to maintain a decent working relationship. That's all I can do, the rest is up to you"''' Crosley's answer is : '''Well, of course the worse offender always wants to "put things behind us"''' ;-)
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt points out more mistakes Crosley made===
| + | |
− | Also in the T-350 Talk page: Cobalt posts and links to the "Help " pages on editing Talk discussion. Crosley found this:
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | '''Delete discussions when they are out-of-date;Discussions can often get left lying around on a talk page long after the issue is no longer relevant. It's usually a good idea to reply to saying "I think this is now resolved", but sooner or later it's time to just blow away the old discussions (they are of course preserved in the editing history).'''
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Crosley edited out old discussion. Crosley was trying to move on. The article by Jake is so diluted in the current article. Jakes article was a performance build and incomplete. I modified the article to a generic T-350 rebuild. Crosley thought that was the point of a Wiki. A constant update - improvement of the article.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Crosley added comments on the "talk page" of the T-350 article about Jakes OE article as inspiration for the current Wiki article as suggested by Jon... Cobalt altered the talk page again, the method of the Wiki. LOL
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Why keep old fotos when article is updated?===
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | I deleted old photos. Why maintain the old photos on server space that someone has to pay $ for ? When does "long enough" apply to maintaining old information?
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt327 reloads fotos===
| + | |
− | I knew cobalt would reload the old fotos. I enjoy providing him the avenue for tasks, I guess. My bad... does that comment 'my bad' , make it all OK? ;-)
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Dont delete Cobalt's fotos===
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Coblat327 asks me to not delete any photos he uploaded. I have not to my knowledge. Even the incorrect photos Cobalt placed in the T-350 Rebuild Tech article with powerglide parts shown. I did not delete that foto as I recall. Cobalt327 does not even know what he posts on some articles.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt and terminology===
| + | |
− | Bell Housing or bellhousing? Rear end or rearend? TH350 or THM 350 or T-350? A fellow I know still calls a T-400 an '''AT-400'''. A term long lost on most folks.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt repackages internet search info===
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | Cobalt327 gathers internet info, repackages it, he becomes a hero. In my eyes cobalt327 is a zero, not to be trusted.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | ===Cobalt327 is NOT a dumb ass===
| + | |
− | With people like Cobalt327 editing Wiki articles, that explains why so many folks do not trust Wiki information. When Crosley jumped on the internet in late 1996 (what little existed) ... Crosley had the foolish idea I could stop or slow down the incorrect information on the web on the subject of automatic transmissions. With people like Cobalt327 that regurgitate any information on all subjects, the cycle will continue forever. Dont mistake my words here for a blanket statement that Cobalt327 is a complete dumb ass, I am sure he is not an unmitigated dumb ass.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | === OH My Gosh ===
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | OH, let me apologize to Cobalt327 (LOL) since I am sure I did not type his full user name correctly each time, I did not space correctly, I did not capitalize correctly, I did not link each spot correctly, I did not punctuate correctly, I did not catch all mis-speeled words, I did not 'do things' as others do on other Wiki sites, did I mention extra spaces?, and his OCD will point that out in a longer response with more '''bold text''' than I used since he has to do more at anything than others have before him.
| + | |
− | | + | |
− | I figure I forgot a few items, Cobalt327 will correct me. I apologize again if I forgot something. If I do not remember forgetting, does it still count as forgetful?

Anyway, the screenshots below is what appears after a save (the saves have been successful even though error messages are displayed). When a file uploaded or an edited page is saved, if the page is refreshed after the error message page comes up, this prompts another file or page save identical to the one just made. That's why there are several identical "File:400steam holes deck.jpg" images and Q-jet rebuild article pages uploaded one after another. − | ==Using someone's original info in CC wiki article==
| + | |
− | I plan to start work soon on a page about combustion chamber quench. I was given the go-ahead by oldbogie via PM (on 1-20-12) to use info from various Hotrodders forum posts he made on the subject (as well as my original text). Would you like me to ask him to send you confirmation before I submit the article to the CC wiki (I didn't think to do this at the time)? Also, how long should permission like this be kept? Right now it’s saved in one of my PM folders at the Hotrodders forum (other permission statements are in my email folder) and can remain there for the duration… is that good enough? I may be being overly cautious, but I just want to be sure I’m on solid ground here. Thanks, [[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 16:44, 9 April 2012 (MDT)

As I understand it (as a non-lawyer), the only person who could bring legal action against the wiki for this type of activity would be oldbogie, and if he's granted permission, I doubt he would renege.--[[User:Jon|Jon]] 11:55, 10 April 2012 (MDT)

− | I'd like to volunteer to become an admin here. I'm not sure if I need to contect Helena about this or if I go through you, but in any event I wanted you to hear it from me first. I hope you're receptive to the idea. Thanks, [[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 09:52, 10 April 2012 (MDT)

| + | Jon- pls. take a look at the discussion between myself and user 'Centerline' under [http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/User_talk:Cobalt327#Article_credits '''Article credits'''] on my user discussion page. Do you have a comment or direction as to how to better handle this? Was considering removing the article or directing Centerline to remove it but stopped short of doing that until I contacted you. Thanks.--[[User:Cobalt327|Cobalt327]] 17:46, 23 February 2016 (MST) |
