There is 2 ways I know it can be done ,but you have to be able to weld , good.
 +
 +
Obviously you have to figure how much your going to take out.
 +
 +
Make sure not to remove any counter weights.
 +
 +
Measure 6 or more times you only get to cut once.
 +
 +
You will need a Piece of "C" channel @ least 2' long & soap stone.
 +
 +
Mark a line on the shaft before you cut it.
 +
 +
1 Two Cuts with band saw or 14" abrasive or one of them new chop saws .
 +
 +
Clamp the cut shaft to a straight piece of "C" channel . Leave about 1/32" gap in between the pieces .
 +
 +
Line up the lines. Tack a weld in 2 to 3 spots then stitch it back together.
 +
 +
 +
2 One cut on one yoke or the other your choice.
 +
 +
Choose the side with no counter weight.
 +
 +
Your cut measurement will be to the edge of the yoke where it butts to the cast iron.
 +
 +
Grind or file the weld if its a rolled & welded tube.
 +
 +
You can use a die grinder or a torch to remove the metal tube & weld from the cast iron yoke.
 +
 +
When the yolk is cleaned slip the tube over the yoke .
 +
 +
Make sure you butt it up good all the way around.
 +
 +
Line up your "U" joints & the chalk line weld it back up.

Drive shafts in automobiles have a YOKE on each end....
 +
 +
It's alway's best to NOT Butt weld to tube together,as it can create a unsafe situation. The Tube yoke'e on the end of the driveline will have about a 1/4 lip that presses into the tube. When cutting the tube yoke out of the tube, you can make a cut line on the weld right where it meets the tube. Start slow with your cut and try and get nice straight line all the way around the shaft. Once you have a nice straight line keep working your way around cutting a little at a time.If your lucky enough to have a lathe just run you lathe back and forth on the weld.
 +
 +
Most car drveline tube's are only .065 or .083 thick, so you will only need to cut that plus the weld thickness and then the tube yoke will tap out. Hopefully if the shaft was put together correctly in the past, when you tap the tube yoke out of the tube,it will still have the lip in it.
 +
 +
When putting back together, tap the tube yoke back into the tube, leaving a little gap. {A little gap is good for weld penatration} It will give you a good melt on the lip on the tube yoke and the tube.
 +
 +
Make sure your yoke's are in phase! They should line up. If you wanna double check the phase just put a small straight edge on each tube yoke and look down the tube. If it's in phase the straight edge's will be lined up with each other.
 +
 +
Before welding you also need to make sure the tube yoke's are in the tube straight. It's best to try and get as close to .005 difference as you can. You always want to take those measurement's 180 from each other.
 +
 +
As stated above, when welding tack in 4 places and then stitch together. When your done welding one spot, move 180 and weld again as you don't want to put to much heat to one side.
