The W's were big bore, short stroke engines (409 had a 4.3125" bore x 3.5" stroke, but only a 6" rod). They had their flaws, though. Among them were the heavy pistons, high rpm caused bearing and rod failures. The 348 could be considered a long rod engine- 4.125" bore x 3.25" stroke w/a 6.135" rod. Same whacked deck angle as the '09, though.

Why they used the ~75 degree block deck and a flat head w/o a chamber is beyond me. Might have been because the heads were easier to make (basically no chamber), but the valve layout required two different pistons per side, so that makes the ease of head manufacturing about a wash, IMHO.
